How to remove limescale from your toilet below waterline

  1. Pour 4 cups of vinegar into the toilet bowl
  2. Leave for 3 hours
  3. Scrub the toilet bowl to loosen the limescale
  4. Flush the toilet
  5. Repeat if there is still some stubborn limescale

Step 1: Pour 4 cups of Vinegar Into Your Toilet

Pour 4 cups / 1 L of vinegar into the toilet bowl.  Make sure that it covers the area of the limescale. White distilled is the best type of vinegar to use for household cleaning. White vinegar has a PH of 2.5.

Step 2: Allow The Vinegar To Sit

Just leave the vinegar to sit for 3 hours. If you have particurly old or thick limescale you may want to let it sit for 5 hours.

Step 3: Scrub The Toilet Bowl

Now that the limescale has been soaking in vinegar it should have softened, making it easier to remove. Take your toilet brush and scrub off the limescale. You can also use a pair of gloves and a kitchen scourer if the limescale is very stubborn or in a place that the brush cannot reach.

Step 4: Flush The Toilet

Once all the limescale has been removed flush the toilet a few times to remove all the vinegar.

Step 5: Repeat

If you are detailing with very old limescale you may need to repeat this process to remove layers of the limescale each time.

You can also use limescale remover tablets each month to maintain the toilet looking nice and clean and free from limescale.  I use Harpic Power Plus on my toilet each month.
